Around 200 young people participated in a midnight basketball event in Palmerston in the Northern Territory last week as part of an ongoing initiative by Mission Australia, Neighbourhood Watch, YMCA and Palmerston City Council to provide a safe, positive environment for young people at risk of harm and anti-social behaviour.
‘Midnite Basketball’ is based on similar programs run elsewhere in Australia. Basketball is offered as a diversionary activity for young people at a time when they would otherwise be roaming the streets and vulnerable to trouble.
Most participants are aged 12-16 and are predominantly Indigenous.
The Palmerston event featured eight basketball games at the Palmerston Recreational Centre preceded by a community disco to help launch National Youth Week.
Mission Australia NT State Director, Phillip Leslie, hailed the Palmerston event as a huge success in terms of connecting with young people and keeping crime down.
“We were overwhelmed with the support from the community and the young people who either helped out or participated in the Palmerston event,” Mr Leslie said.
“Teenagers from all backgrounds took part and had the opportunity to mix in a safe, friendly and fun environment. Ultimately, it helped keep young people off the streets and focus on the games.
“It was a whole-of-community initiative, involving locals, not-for-profits, businesses, the Multicultural Council of NT and politicians.
“The YMCA and Palmerston City Council donated the use of the Palmerston Recreation Centre for free while volunteers from Mission Australia’s Youth Beat service and Neighbourhood Watch helped with everything from providing mentoring to young people at risk and umpiring games to offering lifts home for the kids afterwards.
“Local businesses also kindly donated food and supplies to keep costs at a minimum.
“It’s organised entertainment and activities like Midnite Basketball that help prevent boredom, and reduce the risk of behaviour involving crime, violence and substance abuse.
“This is a long-term project aimed at boosting communities across the NT,” Mr Leslie said.
