Media Release: Here comes trouble - new Sounds of the Street album

Indie rock, hip-hop, R’n’B, world music and a little mashed up, crunched dance is one description of the eclectic music featured on Here Comes Trouble, the new Sounds of Street album by 17 young musicians and song writers confronted by issues of homelessness, mental illness, abuse and addiction.

Here Comes Trouble will be launched at an all ages concert hosted by Triple J radio announcer “The Doctor” at FraserStudios, 10-14 Kensington Street, Chippendale on 6 February 2009 from 4pm to 6pm and will include a live performances by the musicians featured on the album.

All the musicians on Here Comes Trouble are graduates of the Sounds of the Street course at Mission Australia’s Creative Youth Initiatives (CYI) – a service that aims to support 16 to 25 year olds facing many and varied challenges in their personal lives to build self esteem and communication skills, offer them positive learning experiences and provide opportunities to gain formal music qualifications.

Students are tutored by professional musicians during the intensive six month TAFE accredited program before they record the tracks in the recording studio at CYI.

“On this album the young musicians are tackling the trouble, as well as the good stuff, that comes at them everyday. Everything from being homeless, to drug and alcohol use, what it’s like being a refugee in Australia, relationship stuff, gender stuff, love, war… everything they have to cope with,” said Liz Martin, one of the Sounds of the Street Coordinators.

“All these issues are packed into 32 songs with a punch, a sweet sense of humour, a little love, a bit of attitude, raw honesty and a lot of skill.

“It makes for excellent listening and more importantly the music gives these young people a voice; a way to communicate their life experiences creatively and in their own words. By expressing themselves through music, they can gain understanding and control over their issues and in many cases find a pathway back to education or employment.”
