Creating brighter futures

Brighter Futures is a Mission Australia early intervention program for struggling families. Caseworker, Michelle, describes what it’s like to be in the front line of community services.

As a caseworker for the Brighter Futures program, I help clients in many different ways. The job is never predictable and I have to stay on my toes to handle the many different issues that arise every day.

Ultimately, my job is to support and empower my clients to overcome their challenges. Many of my clients are dealing with grief or are trying to overcome a traumatic event. Other clients are dealing with drug or alcohol issues, mental health issues, domestic violence, a lack of social or family support, or a lack of parenting skills. Most clients are vulnerable with complex needs.

I find my clients to be inspiring and I have learnt a great deal from their perseverance and commitment to improve their circumstances and overcome their challenges.

These families are willing to open their homes and trust me to see them at their most vulnerable. It’s a humbling experience and one I am grateful for having.

It is a challenging job, but very satisfying. Being acknowledged for the assistance you have provided and the grateful, heartfelt thanks from your clients is our greatest reward.

I truly wish someone like Michelle would help our family out, we have been turned away left right and centre..We can't afford to eat, I cannot continue my studies to better myself and noone will give me a job.. along with high rent, unable to afford food let alone anything else and having to move in 2 months, to where? I have no idea since no one gives single parents a rental house in Brisbane and its hard to afford what there is now. I am grieving the loss of the other income earner in our home, my mother, so that just adds to the pressure.
